An example of that strategy had its finest hour when the future of the world was in the balance.

In a quiet corner of the Met Office library hangs a map, probably the most famous weather map in the world.

It's the forecast for D-Day. It played a critical role

in the outcome of the Second World War. The weather forecast might well have won the war.

They were trying to predict, within a window of a few days, with the right amount of moon, the right tides,

as to whether the weather would be flat enough for the landings. The forecast was for this ridge of high pressure

to move in across the western part of the Channel. As you can see, it hadn't got quite as far in as was expected.

So conditions weren't perfect, but they knew that if they didn't go at the beginning of June,

they'd have to wait another month.
