Basketball was my life, and it started in large part to Boo Williams, coaching me during the summers camps and the National AAU tournaments. You gave me the exposure and the confidence that I could play with anyone. Boo also helped with something else.

When I was a junior in high school at the age of 17, we played a tournament in Las Vegas. After one game, a friend of mine and his girlfriend introduced me to a young lady by the name of Tracy Wilson.

We had a double date that night at Denny's. Fancy, huh? Pretty fancy. It turned into a long-distance friendship to start. We were even pen pals. Yes, pen pals.

You young people out there, this is what you had to do before social media, all right? I've known this incredible woman for 27 years now.

She wound up attending Howard University in Washington DC, and we've been together ever since. Tracy is an amazing woman, wife and mother.

I always tell her I love the way she loves our three children. Trey, Mike and Alijah. I love her for her intelligence, patience and sacrifices she made throughout my basketball career.

I'm going to thank my children for their patience also. You know, being a professional athlete demands a great deal of time and focus.

A lot of long lonely hours in the gym, and a lot of, you know, weeks on the road, much of that was taken from them. I'm gonna tell you to be deeply loved by someone gives you strength.

I want to thank my wife and kids for their love and giving me the strength to get through all the obstacles throughout this journey, I love you. Through my experiences, I knew how to face things head-on, I understood the importance of a game plan.

I was accustomed to discipline, so when I was diagnosed with kidney disease, not only did I know what I had to do, I was ready to take on this disease and beat it.
