Lord of the Rings actor Ian Holm

has passed away.

The celeb who had roles

in the big screen adaptations

of JR. R Tolkien's books.

And Ridley Scott's

blockbuster alien

died June 19th

in a London hospital.

His agent confirmed in a statement:

'It is with great sadness

that the actor Sir Ian Holm, CBE,

passed away this morning

at the age of 88.

He died peacefully in hospital,

with his family and carer.'

'He was a genius of stage and screen,

winning multiple awards

and loved by directors, audiences

and his colleagues alike.

We will miss him hugely.'

His rep adds,

'Holm was charming, kind

and ferociously talented.'

And says,

'His death was Parkinson's related.'

As news of Holm's passing emerged

tributes began to pour out

on social media

for the beloved actor.

Holm also received an Oscar nomination

for Best Supporting Actor

for his work in the film

Chariots of Fire.
