Each year on February 14th people all over give gifts to their valentine, a card, candy, flowers and maybe most often a big box of chocolates.

But why?

When did chocolate become the go-to gift on Valentine's Day?

Let's find out on today's episode of Colossal Questions.

The first known culture to connect chocolate to love were the Mayans who brewed drinks made from cocoa beans at least 2500 years ago.

That was way before the Candy Cupid's incarnations of Valentine's Day.

This hot cocoa concoction tasted a lot different than the chocolate we usually drink today.

It had no sugar in it, which meant it was quite bitter.

It was an important part of Mayan weddings.

The couple would both take a steaming sip during the ceremony, but it was still another thousand years or so before the first known mention of Saint Valentine's Day popped up in 1382.
