That might sound weird, but it's just the way the chemistry plays out: dissolved CO2 molecules combine with water to form what's called carbonic acid, which in turn combines with carbonate to form hydrogen carbonate.
Carbonic acid has been previously detected on other astronomical bodies, including the icy moons of Jupiter, in some meteorites and comets, and even on Mars and Mercury, but until now, has not been seen in interstellar space.
During heavy rains water, molecules in the rainwater react with the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to form carbonic acid, which makes the rainwater slightly acidic.
The water molecules and carbon dioxide molecules can then react to each other, to form carbonic acid, which lowers the pH of the water, making it slightly acidic.
So when you start to exhale CO2 faster than your cells release it, its concentration in your blood drops. And with less carbonic acid around, your blood's pH starts to rise.
Carbonic acid in particular is formed when CO2 is dissolved in water, meaning that it is present in increased concentrations in our seas due to CO2 in the atmosphere.
The remains which do become embedded, if in sand or gravel, will, when the beds are upraised, generally be dissolved by the percolation of rain water charged with carbonic acid.
In our bodies, these kinds of reactions can’t and don’t take thousands of years to happen, because we have an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase that catalyzes that reaction.
When you have carbonated drinks, it has carbonic acid in it that disassociates into carbon dioxide and that carbon dioxide is what you see bubbling up.
