It is difficult to the point of impossibility for the average reader under the age of forty to imagine a time when high-quality arts criticism could be found in most big-city newspapers.
We have no land ethic yet, but we have at least drawn near the point of admitting that birds would continue as a matter of intrinsic right, regardless of the presence or absence of economic advantage to us.
