Much of the wildfire is currently within the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, home to several endangered species, including about 130 red wolves and the red-cockaded woodpecker.
The woodpecker maybe relates to that. There was a paper published in the medical journal The Lancet in England few years ago called " A man who pricked his finger and smelled putrid for five years."
Partridges and woodpeckers were booming and knocking in the forest. Squirrels were chattering, birds singing, and overhead honked the wild-fowl driving up from the south in cunning wedges that split the air.
Nuthatches have a similar niche to that of the woodpecker because their habitats are the same, as is their diet, but there is something which makes the nuthatch unique.
He got lots of birds, downy woodpeckers, northern cardinals, mourning doves, house sparrows and many others, and watching them was a learning experience.
