This photo, taken at the Benin palace after the raid, shows soldiers with the dismantled plaques that were brought to the British Museum, and sold all over the world.
The walls were not very strongly built, and I found I could easily take down those stones. Behind them there was, as I knew there must be, a hole just big enough to hold the body.
Steel holders attached each bone to the larger structure more firmly than in the living animal -- but in such a way that any bone, or all of them, could be removed for repair or research.
