A satellite galaxy of our Milky Way, the Small Magellanic Cloud is wonder of the southern sky, named for 16th century Portuguese circumnavigator Ferdinand Magellan.
And it's now proving valuable for helping astronomers and other scientists understand more about the evolution of stars, black holes, and the structure of the Milky Way.
While the Webb mission is expected to continue for 20 years, scientists are hopeful it will provide new insights about the formation of stars, Galaxies, planets and perhaps the presence of life.
The technology works by detecting infrared light in the cosmos which allows observers to see through layers of dust, illustrating what's happening inside the Milky Way.
