What is so extraordinary is that the strange creatures in this panel are painted with the same conviction and realism as the humans as though they actually existed.
All the trompe-l'oeil panels are actually quite masculine in style, but obviously Queen Charlotte is rather feminine in her demeanour, but she is in a very masculine role sometimes.
With this meticulous parallel hatching which makes it like a specimen what it does is it sort of pushes the object that you're portraying forward in front of the plane of the drawing or whatever.
