Variolation usually involved rubbing crushed smallpox scabs into cuts on the hand, or blowing them in pellets into the nostrils.

Variolation probably worked because it introduced  the variola in a part of the body the virus wasn't prepared for, disabling most of its nasty  tricks.

Venetian physician Jacopo Pallarini, who practised variolation in the city, wrote a book about it in 1715. Then British writer Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, who had been left severely disfigured by the disease, observed the practice.
