It's also a signal to everyone listening to you that you're just thinking out loud. You're still figuring out all the little pieces. And that's the whole point of brainstorming.
By gathering the nitty-gritty details of a rhetorical situation, we can see what's happening in persuasive speech and texts, and notice broader patterns of success and failure that we can learn from.
