For years, the former Arizona congressman has been pushing legislation that would prop up the dollar coin by phasing out the greenback a move that has met resistance from both politicians and the public.
The bursts have left the currency, at 156 yen to the dollar, up by 4% against the greenback and marginally above the 37-year lows it reached earlier this month.
They wished to see the greenbacks withdrawn from circulation and gold—a metal more limited in volume than silver—made the sole basis of the national monetary system.
