And in that burrow, researchers discovered the nearly complete remains of a small animal called Thrinaxodon, one of the early mammal relatives known as cynodonts.
It's almost entirely ape-like, but with smaller canine teeth than chimps today, and a skull carried upright instead of at an angle, the way knuckle-walkers carry theirs.
The skeleton had well-developed canine teeth, and was placed within a neatly laid brick structure facing toward the direction of the emperor's tomb, with its tail pointing westward.
