And it turns out that microscopically rough surfaces tend to be more hydrophobic, because they can trap pockets of air and minimize the interaction between water droplets and the surface of the material.

A non-conservative substitution means that the new amino acid - valine, which is hydrophobic - has different properties than the one it replaced - glutamic acid, which is hydrophilic.

They're hydrophobic or hydrophilic, basic or acidic.

Here's what they saw: the leaves are extremely hydrophobic—meaning water beads up to minimize contact with the surface.

THE repulsive powers of lotus leaves are the stuff of legend.

It's hydrophobic, which is why water notoriously does not help when you eat something that's too spicy.

Lyme disease is primarily caused by a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by the bite of the blacklegged tick—more commonly known as the deer tick.

The surfaces hydrophobicity had been increased.
