Horseflies are known to prefer horizontal polarised light.

Many of the creatures lumped together as jellyfish are no more closely related than, say, horseflies are to horses.

The researchers then recorded videos of horseflies trying to get at the horses.

Bee sting? No, that hurts. More like a horse-fly.

The researchers recorded videos of horse flies as they tried to bite zebras and horses at a farm in North Somerset, England.

Biting flies within Diptera, like mosquitoes, horse flies, and deer flies, have a piercing-sucking mouthpart instead of the sponging mouthpart.

They put these objects in a field infested with horseflies and counted the number of insects they trapped.

Indeed, previous research has shown that fly attacks on horses and cattle reduce their body fat and milk production.

Zebra stripes do, therefore, seem to repel horseflies.

That fact got Dr Horvath wondering how they would react to a striped horse—in other words, a zebra.

Their first discovery was that stripes attracted fewer flies than solid, uniform colours.

Such research has also shown something odd: horseflies attack black horses in preference to white ones.

But Dr Horvath thinks it might be related to a horsefly's ability to see polarised light, which imposes a sense of horizontal andvertical on an image.

If you have not had the pleasure, it's like an infected horsefly bite.

The horsefly he's a different sort, he dies of himself.

Astride her web, Charlotte sat moodily eating a horsefly and thinking about the future.

Possibly, the mostly vertical stripes on a zebra confuse the fly's tiny brain and thus stop it seeing the animal.
