Addressing thousands of militia members in a rally in Caracas , Mr . Maduro said he aimed to raise their numbers to three million by the end of the year .
The civilian militia which was created by Mr . Maduro ' s predecessor Hugo Chavez is designed to support the armed forces , but it also responds directly to the presidency .
Mr . Maduro has repeatedly accused the US and the opposition of conspiring to kill him . The increase in militia numbers will be seen as an attempt to shield himself further both politically and physically .

His statement comes on the fifth anniversary of the kidnapping by Boko Haram of two hundred and seventy - six girls from their school . Sixty girls have since escaped , over a hundred more being freed , but a hundred and twelve are still missing .
