Hi everyone. In this video, we're going to look at the /əʊ/ sound.
It's in words like "no" and "toast".
This is a diphthong which means it's a combination of two vowel sounds in the one syllable.
This diphthong is made up of the /ə/ sound and the /ʊ/ sound, although some people make it into an /uː/ sound.
So for this one, we start with the schwa /ə/ and then we move to /ʊ/, so your mouth will become more rounded: /əʊ/ /əʊ/.
Say it after me: /əʊ/ /əʊ/.
Here are some words with this sound: row, home, open, boat.
And now a sentence: I rowed home in an open boat.
I hope that was helpful.
As usual, if you can think of more words with this diphthong, please write them in the comments.
