Hello, I'm Oli from Oxford Online English. Today, we have a free lesson about the IELTS writing exam.

Many English learners are studying English because they want to work or study in an English speaking country. For many students, that means taking an IELTS exam, which tests all the main skills: speaking, reading, listening, and writing.

For many English learners, the writing part of the IELTS exam is the most difficult. In this lesson, I'll share some simple advice for anyone who's planning to take IELTS or wants to get a better score in the writing.

Point one, answer the question! It's the most important point, I know it sounds obvious, it sounds stupid.

But I've taught writing classes to a lot of people and this is problem number one. Remember, everything you write should address the question directly.

Even if you write in perfect English, the examiners cannot give you marks for writing which doesn't answer the question. So, read the questions carefully and think before you write to make sure your answer is relevant.

Don't try to use something you've memorized. Don't try to use something you've written before. It won't work.

Number two, structure and organize your writing. Essay structure is really important.

First of all, it helps you to organize your ideas in a logical way. Secondly, a well-structured essay is much easier for the examiner to read and understand.

You can have really good ideas and you can write in perfect English, but if you don't organize your ideas well, your essay won't be easy to read and understand. The examiner will not spend a lot of time trying to read and understand your essay.
