Important Rivers: Mississippi and Missouri.

Important Mountains: Rocky and Appalachian.

Important Lakes: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario.

This is a map of the United States today. It is a big country with 50 states.

The first European explorers came to America about 400 years ago.

At that time America was an enormous wilderness and Indians lived there.

America became independent from Britain in 1776.
