We know the Pakicetus is an ancestor of modern whales because fossil findings show us that their ear bones have distinctive features that are unique to whales today. And occasionally we still find whales with the vestiges of tiny hind limbs.
We think that one of the reasons that the ancestors of whales moved from the land to the ocean was to exploit food resources such as fish, which land mammals simply couldn't access.
