In a previous video, we explored the two affricates, or complex consonant sounds, of American English.
They are/tʃ/and/dʒ/.
We also explored voicing - the movement of the vocal cords, in previous videos as well.
A quick reminder about affricates.
In a previous video, I described affricates as being kind of like addition - one plus one equals two.
Affricates are made up of a stop sound followed by a fricative sound.
Another way to think of this is stop sound plus fricative sound equals affricate.
So, our first affricative/tʃ/consists of a/t/sound followed by/ʃ/.
Together, they make/tʃ/.
