In my heritage, Chinese New Year is the most important celebration of the year.

And with any celebration, symbols are what make the tradition.

The fish, in Mandarin, is " yu" and its of a similar sound to the " yu" that means surplus or abundance.

The fish is steamed in whole from head to tail during the new year.

A common mixture of scallion, ginger, soy sauce that adds to the flavors and colors on the plate.

Leading up to the new year, families would gather to make chicken or pork dumplings by hand.

They're a symbol of wealth.

Because they closely resemble traditional Chinese gold.

It is said that dumplings should never be arranged in circles but always in lines.

Circles could represent that a person's life will lead nowhere.
