Hi guys. In this video, we're going to look at the /aʊ/ sound.
This is in words like "about" and "now".
This is a diphthong, so it's a combination of two vowel sounds within the one syllable.
This diphthong is made up of the /a/ sound and the /ʊ/ sound.
This /a/ sound doesn't exist in Received Pronunciation by itself, but don't worry about that too much, because nowadays lots of people start this sound in the /æ/ position, which we looked at in another video.
First, your lips will be a little stretched out /æ/, and then they will become rounded: /aʊ/ /aʊ/.
Say it after me: /aʊ/ /aʊ/.
And now here are some words with this sound: brown, cow, out, found, flower.
And now all in a sentence: The brown cow went out and found the flower.
If you can think of more words with this sound, please write them in the comments.
