'It beats me' – a phrase used for saying that you do not know or understand something.
[非常实用的短语，但是它和[打人]一点关系都没有。]
The native speakers use it a lot, also you can say ‘Who knows?’
[后期六：beats me和who knows这俩差不多意思，都有那种“我不道，别问我”的傲娇感]
例：
When does the university start?
大学什么时候开学？
Beats me!
Look at the admission notice.
我咋知道！看看录取通知书！
连读或者变音
It beats me why she stays with him.
[连读起来像一个词]
另一个例子：
It’s just not been a good day so far.
[后期六：听起来不大像原来的s和dʒ，而像/ʃ/。 变音，could you, (d+ju);It's just(s+dʒ）]

safely
So now I can safely say, it beats me what’s going on in the office - I haven’t got a clue.

Do something safely is you will do something in a careful or cautious way.
[后期六：do sth safely本意就是小心谨慎地做事]
tense
Well the situation seemed very tense and the boss was shouting something about mice.
Tense is when something is stretched tight. 是某事被紧紧拉住的状态。
A rope can be tense. So can a muscle. When a person's tense, they're anxious.
[后期六：绳子和肌肉紧绷着都用tense,人紧绷着就是，紧张呗。]
“the situation seemed very tense”固定搭配，形容场面或情况看起来很紧张，形势严峻。
When a situation is tense, you might say you could "cut the tension with a knife."
[后期六：紧张感都可以实物具象化了（可以被切），可见情况多紧张╮(╯▽╰)╭]
[Don't be so anxious, just cut the tension with a knife. 也有别紧张，放轻松的意思。

tense up
When the muscle tenses up，it contracts suddenly.
contract，收缩。economy contracts：经济紧缩。
例：US economy contracts at more than 6 percent annual rate.[美国经济年收缩率超过6%.]
tense的反义词是relaxed（放松的，轻松的）
If you tense up during exams, it's probably best to learn some relaxation techniques. The brain works best when it's relaxed. [如果考试中紧张，最好学点放松技巧。大脑在放松的时候才运转的最好。]
