The history of China's top political advisory body dates back 70 years and its first top legislature convened in 1954.

In the early years, the sessions were not held annually, however they have been held on a yearly basis since 1978, the year China launched reform and opening-up.

The "two sessions" referred to the meetings of the National People's Congress and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
