We explain The Mid-autumn Festival also known as The Moon Festival.
This festival celebrated by Chinese and Vietnamese people takes place on the 15th day of the 8th Chinese lunar month.
The day when the moon is believed to be a fullest and brightest.
Ancient Chinese emperors believe that worshipping the moon on this day would bring them a plentiful harvest.
To express their gratitude and appreciation for the moon they offered sacrifices such as plums apples or grapes.
Two notable traditions during the festival are moon gazing and Lantern lighting.
People gaze to admire and welcome the full moon expressing their thoughts and feelings or praying for a good harvest.
Colorful lanterns in various shapes are made by children and their families and hung in trees or floated on rivers.
Another important part of the festival are mooncakes.
Mooncakes are round symbolizing the reunion of a family they come in many flavours depending on what region they come from.
