Today, I'll be talking about the movie Exotica. I wanna start out by showing a short clip from it.
I want to remind you before I get into the lecture today about the reading for next time.
We'll be starting to read Plato's Symposium. And on the syllabus it tells you how far to read:
from the very beginning to 185c. Just to remind you that in Plato's dialogues,
they all have a standard numbering that's the same regardless of
which edition or translation you use. They are based on an early modern edition,
so they are called Stephanus' numbers after that editor's name. Those numbers are embedded in your text
in square brackets and in italics, and are also listed at the top of the pages
in the translation I've ordered for this course. So I'll read from the beginning of Symposium at 172a to 185c
which will take you through the first two characters who give speeches about the nature of erotic love,
