Calvin and I are journalists covering the Communist Party of China's 19th National Congress.

Hi everybody, I'm Calvin from the United States, now working as a journalist for China Daily.

As this will be Calvin's first time reporting on a party congress, he has lots of questions.

Dow, do you know how many representatives are there?

There are 2,287 delegates in all, elected from the 89 million party members in the country.

There are party election units nationwide, including the 31 provincial-level administrative regions, and key organizations such as offices directly under the Communist Party of China's Central Committee, central governmental departments, central financial institutions, and central state-owned enterprises.

Any party member wishing to be a representative must pass four tests.

Round 1, party members discuss nominees and put forward names of preliminary candidates.

Round 2, background checks are conducted on the preliminary candidates and public opinions are solicited.

Round 3, if no issues are found, the party organizations of the election units will firstly vote on the preliminary candidates to form a candidate list.
