During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Empress Ma, the wife of Emperor Ming of Han, was born into a prestigious family.

Her father, Ma Yuan, was a celebrated general of the Eastern Han Dynasty who had made outstanding contributions to the establishment of the empire.

However, after Ma entered the imperial palace and became empress, she never relied on her family's reputation or influence to secure official positions or special privileges for her relatives.

Instead, she set strict standards for them and repeatedly reminded them to remain modest and disciplined.

On one occasion, Emperor Ming of Han planned to appoint some of Empress Ma's relatives to important government positions.

She firmly declined the offer, believing that relatives of the empress could easily misuse their power and pose a threat to the stability of the court.

Later, some of her relatives voluntarily gave up their official positions and returned to their hometown estates.

Years afterward, when Empress Ma visited her family, she passed by the residences of her relatives and witnessed a striking scene: carriages streamed through the streets like flowing water, while riders stretched out in a long procession like a winding dragon.

However, rather than feeling proud of such prosperity, Empress Ma became concerned.

She warned her family members to remain humble and cautioned them against pursuing excessive wealth, power, and luxury.
