Hi everyone, and welcome back to your favorite segment Sound of Musicals. 欢迎回来你们最喜欢的板块【曲外之音】. Hi, Oliver.

Hello. Good to be back. Hello, hello.

It has been a while.

It has, hasn't it, yeah. Very busy recently, I'm afraid.

Yeah. Same here. But I can't wait for us to dive, re-dive back into the sea of musicals or musical movies.

I know, I've been looking forward to this all week. So which musical movie do you want to dive into today?

I give you a hint. This is an oldy but a goody. So, Doe, a deer, a female deer.

Ray, a drop of golden sun. I know, I know, I've got it. It’s a good one, it is a good one, The Sound Of Music, classic.

The Sound Of Music, 音乐之声。其实我们这个板块叫做Sound Of Musicals, it's also a play on Sound Of Music.

Yes. It is where this name comes from.

Yeah. So first of all, The Sound Of Music, I'm pretty sure The Sound Of Music is one of those musicals or musical movies that most Chinese audience are quite familiar with. So is it the same in English speaking world The Sound Of Music? Is it something that everyone knows?

I think it is very, very well known. Certainly, it's one of the most well known and popular musicals in many places, many countries. Definitely.

So I know I grew up with my family, my grandfather specifically watched it every year at Christmas. That's how I was kind of introduced to not just The Sound Of Music, but musicals in general, it was kind of my first experience of them.

It does feel like one of those Christmassy or just festive movies to watch, right?

It does, and I'm not entirely sure I could tell you why. But for me, it's a Christmas musical because my grandfather watched it at Christmas.

And again, I'm not sure why, because I don't think there's anything really about Christmas in it at all.

No. No. But I think it's just like happy ending, everyone everything worked out in the end. That sort of, like warm fuzzy type of thing.

It’s, yeah. It's got some serious moments, but overall it is quite a feel good film, isn't it?

Emm. So let's start with the background, we were talking about musical movies, so which came first remind me, was it the musical or was it the Disney film?

Actually. It was a book, it was neither. The first idea of The Sound Of Music, it comes from the memoirs of Maria von Trapp. So the Maria from the musical was a real person.

Oh, I did not know that.

And it's from her memoirs. So she wrote down her experiences of living with the von Trapp family and becoming part of the von Trapp family in Austria during the1930s. From there it became a musical on Broadway in 1959, is when it premiered on Broadway.

And then after that, it became the Disney film that we know today that most people know today.

I see. I never really knew it was based on real life memoir. I thought it was just one of those stories that were just created for the sake of it really.

I know. I was exactly the same when I found this, when I was looking into interesting things to say today. I was quite surprised to find that it was a real thing.

Okay.

So let's get into the story itself. I'm pretty sure a lot of our audience knew the story, but maybe you need a little bit of refreshing, but before you start, von Trapp, this von, v-o-n that sounds aristocratic and German.

It is, yes. Certainly Germany and Austria and a lot of those kind of central European countries. They have a lot of the nobility, the aristocrats, they often have ‘von’ in their name.

Unfortunately. I'm don't really speak much German, so I'm not entirely sure what von means. I need to do my research there.

Von means from, I think it's from, so it's basically you kind of own the... like your family, probably like own the land. That's why you're like from that place or of that place.

Okay, I see. Yeah. So that's the aristocratic noble side of it. I see, okay.

Yeah, and also you said it was set in the 1930s, so that was the beginning of the whole Nazi thing, right?

It was, yeah, part of, or a large part of The Sound Of Music, is the lead up to something which was called the Anschluss of Austria. That was when the Nazi party leading Germany kind of took over Austria. It wasn't a violent thing at that time. It was an agreement between the two countries that Germany would take over the country of Austria and its government. But it did upset a lot of people in Austria, because of the ideas and beliefs that the Nazis had. So that's why part of the musical, The Sound Of Music.

What’s about that?

It's about dealing with the Nazi takeover of Austria. Yeah.

Mhm, okay. So I'm going to entrust you with the task of walking us through the story. Alright?

Right. Well. As I said, it set in the 1930s leading up to the Anschluss of Austria where Nazi Germany takes over Austria. And it begins the movie musical, begins with Maria running through the mountains, on a beautiful Austrian mountainside scene. And Maria is, she's a very free spirited novice nun. She's just entered the order.

Emm. Novice non is basically a new like an intern non, isn't it? It's like a new being.

It is, when you join, there are different stages within the abbey, and novice is the kind of the lower rank and there's lots of rules and restrictions and things within the abbey. And so Maria is at the lowest level there.

这里要跟大家说一下, 就是Maria这个主角如果大家不知道或者不记得了的话, 她是一个刚进修道院的修女.

So nuns, in that sense, they were not supposed to fall in love or get married or be with men. That was the point, right?

That is exactly the opposite of what nuns should have been doing. Yes. The idea of nuns are they are married to god.

I see.

And so they cannot have any relations in this world basically. So they have to follow strict rules for prayer and religion.

Mhm.

Maria is sent to be a governess, so kind of like a nanny, a teacher, a caretaker. She lives with for seven children in the house of a captain, I can't remember, I think. Georg, I've forgotten how they say it. Georg.

Georg. I think Georg.

Georg von Trapp, who is... he's a widower. His wife has died. And he's a retired naval officer. He's very used to being in charge and very strict and serious. And you can see that in his relationship with his children, he's got a whistle and they all line up and step forward and shout their names and it's very very military. Yeah.

It's like military training in that household.

It is.

By the way, let me just clarify with our audience like governess这个词就是家庭教师. Actually you see that quite often in some of the old like European period drama period stories. You also see governess in like Sherlock Holmes stories. Was that a thing for like rich families in Europe to have a governess live in?

Yeah, it was very common with the parents either needing to work or depending on the social class, some of them saw that they needed somebody to look after their children because I'm doing important things, I can pay somebody to do this, so I don't have to do that type of thing.

I see.

And in The Sound Of Music, it's because he is working, he's away, he travels a lot. And so he needs someone to raise his children to be there to look after them, to feed them, to teach them, to guide them basically, which is what Maria ends up doing.

I remember the kids were really unruly. They were really difficult in the beginning, because they sort of rebelled against their dad, sort of this whole strict regime and strict discipline.

So they were trying to make life very difficult for Maria. I still remember there was one kid stepping out and say “I am 7, I am incorrigible, I am impossible”.

Yeah, they give her a difficult time to start with for sure, things like leaving a frog in her pockets. I think and when they're having their first dinner together, they have a pine cone on her chair. She sits on it and then jump straight back up again.

So it's not easy to start with, but she does eventually win them over with kindness, and not following the military style that she's supposed to or she is told to. She looks after them, she cares for them. One of the most important things or the biggest thing she does is to teach them how to sing.

That’s the do re mi. right? To a ...

That's the do re mi. Yeah.

Yeah. When you speak, you start with abc. When you sing, you begin with, do re mi.

That's it. So she teaches them how to sing when they're walking through the mountains, into the towns and villages and things like that.

And eventually, captain von Trapp, he starts to notice oh my children they can sing. This is really nice and he starts to get closer to his own children as well as closer to Maria, because Maria and captain von Trapp, they begin to fall in love, which is, as we said, as a nun, Maria is not supposed to do that.

Yep. And also captain von Trapp was kind of like engaged to like a baroness, right? Like a aristocratic woman.

Yeah, he is supposed to be marrying or engaged to this a lady a baroness called Elsa von Schraeder, who is very very wealthy, but his children don't really like her very much. So it's a little bit funny. So both Maria and captain von Trapp, they've got these two different things pulling them apart, but still they come together and find love together.

But meanwhile, there was this whole looming threat from the Nazi party, as you were saying in the very beginning, the Nazi party, like Germany, basically wanted to almost annex Austria, take over Austria.

They did, yes, that's exactly what they did do. And they do try to recruit captain von Trapp. They try to kind of pressure him into joining the Nazi led navy, because he used to do that before in World War I. He was part of the navy and they want him back.

But he disagrees very much with the ideas and ideology of the Nazi party. And so he realizes that him, his family and Maria, they can't stay in Austria. Otherwise, it will be very, very dangerous for them.

Yeah.

So they decide to leave the country to flee into Switzerland, which Switzerland was neutral throughout World War II. So it was neither side of the war and there was no fighting there, so it would be a safe place for them.

So I remember that bit when the kids were singing goodbye, farewell, and then they were singing it in German as well. They used the song and dance as some sort of like a trick, a disguise and then they all fled.

And then they're gone. Yeah. It was a cover “So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen goodbye.”

Yeah.

I think something like that anyway. Yeah.

Yeah.

And so after they have sung their little cover song, basically they escape to the abbey, Maria's abbey, and the nuns in the abbey help them to escape into Switzerland.

Emm, and they lived happily ever after in Switzerland, I guess.

I do hope so, yes, the movie does end with them walking into the mountains. So we can hope they did escape and live a happy life after that.

Yeah. I mean the whole storyline is actually not that difficult, it's basically just a nun to be girl got into this family, and then turn the kids around, and then fell in love with the father, and then they all escaped Nazi regime, Nazi rule.

Yeah, when you think about the main events that happened, it's kind of like an old story. There are many stories like it, different countries, different people, different events, but a similar background to it.

Yep. All right. And that ends our first episode of The Sound Of Music. In the second episode. We'll dive into the themes. And most importantly, the music.

I can't wait. Sounds good.

All right. So until then.

See you next time.
