In ancient China, there was a county magistrate named Wang Lu.

When he served as the magistrate of Dangtu County, he abused his authority, accepted bribes, and accumulated great wealth through corrupt practices.

The officials under his command soon followed his example. They secretly took bribes, extorted money from ordinary people, and committed all kinds of abuses.

As a result, the people lived in anger and resentment, with complaints spreading throughout the county.

One day, while reviewing legal documents, Wang Lu came across a complaint filed against his chief clerk.

The clerk was accused of corruption, favoritism, and breaking the law. The charges were backed by clear evidence, and every wrongdoing was described in detail.

However, as Wang Lu continued reading, he grew increasingly uneasy.

The crimes mentioned in the complaint were exactly the same kinds of crimes he himself had been committing.

If the case were investigated thoroughly, the accusations would eventually point back to him.

Looking at the document, Wang Lu thought nervously to himself, "This is dangerous. I must be more careful from now on. Fortunately, this case is in my own hands." After reading the complaint, he casually picked up his brush and wrote a sentence on the document: "You may have only beaten the grass, but you have already frightened the snake hiding beneath it." The idiom is used to describe a situation in which someone acts carelessly and reveals their intentions too soon, giving an opponent a chance to prepare, or unintentionally alerting a hidden enemy.
